Join Emmylou Harris, Paralympian Ryan Chalmers at benefit for disability scuba diving program

What do teenagers with disabilities scuba diving in Grand Cayman, Emmylou Harris and Paralympic athlete Ryan Chalmers have in common?

You will be able to hear about all of them Tuesday, October 7 at a benefit for Stay-Focused in Dallas.

Stay-Focused ProgramStay-Focused is a nonprofit program that provides opportunities for teens with disabilities to scuba dive in the Cayman Islands. Emmylou Harris has donated her talents to give an intimate concert to help raise funds for the organization.

As a scuba diver, I have experienced the bliss of floating weightlessly and silently in the beautiful Cayman Island waters looking at colorful fish and coral reef. Roger Muller, the founder of Stay-Focused, experienced the same thing in 2000 while diving with his brother Bobby, who returned from the Vietnam War with paraplegia. After seeing the joy and freedom Bobby experienced in the water, Muller wanted to give teens with disabilities the same opportunity.

Muller formed Stay-Focused to provide teenagers the opportunities to experience the physical joy of scuba diving and build independence. Teens spend a week in the Cayman Islands going through PADI certification so that they are certified to dive anywhere, any time. They are then invited to come on an alumni trip and enjoy diving, leisure and comradery.

Stay-Focused also provides mentoring and teaches leadership skills to the young people, Muller said.

Event attendees have the rare opportunity to hear legendary singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris, a 13-time Grammy winner, perform in an intimate setting. They’ll also hear from Stay-Focused alum Ryan Chalmers, a Paralympic athlete who is now famous for his “Push Across America” in 2013, when he pushed his wheelchair from Los Angeles to New York in 71 days, raising funds for Stay-Focused and awareness of athletes with disabilities. Stay-Focused changed his life and he is now devoted to mentoring and helping others change theirs.

The benefit will be held at 6 p.m. on October 7 at the Arlington Hall at Lee Park. If you would like to attend this benefit, you may purchase tickets here on the Stay-Focused website here. Tickets for the reception and the concert cost $150. VIP tickets, which include a pre-reception meet and greet with Emmylou Harris and Stay-Focused alums, and a three-course dinner, are $500.
